To get an apostille in Australia, submit your original public document or notarised private document to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) via the Smartraveller Notarial Services Portal.

What is an Apostille?
An apostille is an official certificate. It proves that a signature, stamp, or seal on a document is real. Australia does this through DFAT.
Step 1: Check the Document
- Make sure you have an original Australian public document (like a birth or marriage certificate) or a private document notarised by an Australian Notary Public.
- Ask the overseas organisation what they need before you apply.
Step 2: Choose How to Submit
You can submit your documents in two ways through Smartraveller:
- In Person: Book an appointment online and visit your nearest Australian Passport Office (located in state and territory capital cities).
- By Mail: Post your original documents and forms via registered post to an Australian Passport Office (such as Melbourne or Sydney). Include a credit card payment authorisation and a self-addressed registered post envelope.
Step 3: Pay the Fee
- The current fee is $105 per apostille or authentication.
